What Causes Backflow?

Well, it could be Mexican food!  Sorry, we are referring to backflow in your plumbing.  Actually, there are two main causes for backflow.  They are 1.) back pressure and 2.) back siphonage.  Back pressure is when water is forced to flow in the opposite direction.  Back siphonage is when the pressure in the water supply becomes smaller than the pressure in the plumbing system itself.

An air gap may be used to fix the problem.  A very simple method of prevention is to create an air gap below the water outlet and right above the top potential water level in the appliance. This method is commonly used with sinks. The air gap ensures that contaminated water can’t be drawn back into the water supply.

A plumber who has fixed backflow problems hundreds of times is the right answer to your backflow dilemma.  When backflow becomes the bane of your existence in the Chattanooga area call All Home Plumbing at (423) 598-1466.  They will fix the problem quickly and completely…guaranteed!
