How often does your backflow preventor need to be tested? A reduced pressure zone assembly or abbreviated RPZ absolutely needs to be tested every year. Then, every five years it should be rebuilt. It is YOUR responsibility to make sure that it is functioning properly at all times!

How to Prevent Backflow.

Backflow refers to the reversal of the flow of water. When it comes to problems with plumbing in your Chattanooga area home, a backflow problem is one of the most serious because it can lead to water contamination AND cause a huge mess! It occurs when downstream pressure from a contaminated source becomes greater than the main source of water.

Here are a couple of reasons why backflow results –

1.  Downstream pressure increases when heat expands from boilers

2.  Potable water pressure is decreased by a factor such as a break in the main water line.

Regardless of the cause of the problem, All Home Plumbing of Chattanooga will fix it! All Home Plumbing addresses any and all backflow dilemmas that occur in Chattanooga area homes and businesses. Hopefully, you have heard of them…if not just google allhomeplumbing.com (simple, huh?) then call anytime at (423) 598-1466.

RPZ Made Easy (To Understand)

RPZ valves are also called backflow devices.  What does RPZ mean?  It stands for Reduced Pressure Zone.  Why is it so important to many Chattanooga area plumbing systems?  Well, how about protecting the quality of your drinking water so that it remains free of contaminants and keeps your family healthy?

When a home in our area is equipped with an irrigation system or a fire suppression unit RPZ valves become required items in your castle.  Contaminants can also enter your irrigation system from fertilizer or pesticides that have been sprayed onto lawns.  In a fire suppression system, water sits stagnant or trapped which leads to a build-up of bacteria.

You are required to have your backflow system checked each year.  For that, the home and business owners of the Chattanooga area can always count on All Home Plumbing.  If you live in our area in or around Chattanooga please call All Home Plumbing for backflow checking or replacement at (423) 598-1466.

Preventing Backflow.

Learning how to test a backflow preventer is very important, since there are over 10,000 reported cases of backflow contamination each year.  Some of them can even be fatal!  Testing for backflow in your Chattanooga area home is NOT an option.  Backflow prevention devices are required by law and must be installed.

What is in a typical backflow assembly?  Well, it has test cocks and shut-off valves and must be checked yearly and when the unit is installed or when relocating.  There are several types of backflow test equipment that are available from multiple manufacturers.  This is all pretty boring isn’t it?

What you need to know is that in the Chattanooga area the very best place to call to have that mandatory backflow test should be the plumbing pros at All Home Plumbing.  The crew at All Home will run the proper test and hand you the certification for another year.  Call All Home Plumbing for backflow protection at (423) 598-1466.

What Causes Backflow?

Well, it could be Mexican food!  Sorry, we are referring to backflow in your plumbing.  Actually, there are two main causes for backflow.  They are 1.) back pressure and 2.) back siphonage.  Back pressure is when water is forced to flow in the opposite direction.  Back siphonage is when the pressure in the water supply becomes smaller than the pressure in the plumbing system itself.

An air gap may be used to fix the problem.  A very simple method of prevention is to create an air gap below the water outlet and right above the top potential water level in the appliance. This method is commonly used with sinks. The air gap ensures that contaminated water can’t be drawn back into the water supply.

A plumber who has fixed backflow problems hundreds of times is the right answer to your backflow dilemma.  When backflow becomes the bane of your existence in the Chattanooga area call All Home Plumbing at (423) 598-1466.  They will fix the problem quickly and completely…guaranteed!

One and Done.

This is a phrase commonly used in college basketball.  A player can participate for one season at the collegiate level then go into the pros.  As it pertains to plumbers doing backflow testing this is definitely NOT the case.  A licensed backflow technician in the State of Tennessee must go in for re-certification from time-to-time.

Backflow certifications are valid for 3 years from the date of issue.  Each student is required to pass a written and practical (hand’s on) exam for the reduced pressure backflow preventer and the double check valve assembly (abbreviated DCVA).  It is an effective refresher program instructed by highly qualified professionals.

That is why when you call on the expertise of All Home Plumbing to test for backflow in the Chattanooga area you are calling on more than two decades of experience.  That inspires confidence…doesn’t it?  For any backflow testing that needs to be done at your home or office complex call All Home Plumbing at (423) 598-1466.

Backflow in the Winter.

Backflow devices are found all over this great country.  They protect our drinking water from contamination.  Everywhere from sunny, warm southern Florida to Maine and right here in the Chattanooga area there are backflow problems that crop up.  There are differences in backflow prevention between warmer and chillier times of the year.

They all require annual inspections of assemblies nationwide, no matter the annual rainfall or average temperature in the dead of winter.  In cold weather, assemblies and their meters must be protected against freezing.  More damage can be done in cold climates than warm…it’s really that simple!

This time of year, snow and freezing temperatures can take their toll on access doors and equipment.  There is a perfect solution in Chattanooga, Hixon, and the surrounding area.  It’s All Home Plumbing.  That is whom you call for any and all inspections, repairs, and replacements of equipment.  Give All Home a call today at (423) 598-1466.
